According to the English-translator and editor, George Simpson, “Le Suicide is among the very first modern examples of consistent and organized use of statistical method in social investigation” (Durkheim 1951, 9). The first edition of Suicide was published in French in 1897, during the emergence of the scholarly field of Sociology. As such, the text serves as an introduction to quantitative methods of population health, where social and environmental determinants of health are scrutinized in a thorough and systematic investigation of factors contributing to suicide deaths.

I hope that the information shared on this website might help and encourage new scholars in population health to explore Durkheim’s findings, using contemporary software and visualization tools. And, I hope to support and enliven curiosity about the ways that our social, cultural and environmental interactions co-produce our health.
